A bicycle sharing system, like the one in Paris, is coming to San Francisco. But don’t get too excited: it is just a pilot program for now.
Pranksters just relabeled the entire three-mile length of Bush Street to Obama Street.

Safari on the Mac doesn’t give you much control over cookies and how they expire. To periodically delete cookies I had to write an AppleScript and trigger it daily in iCal. However starting in Mac OS X 10.5.6 there is a easier way: change the Library/Cookies directory to read-only. This has the effect of making all cookies essentially session-only.
Kiyoshi (glowing jellyfish) Kurosawa’s latest: Tokyo Sonata. It’s eerie how US trailers for foreign language movies avoid showing any dialog whatsoever. Presumably this is because subtitles would scare away potential viewers?
Movie poster remakes by Flickr’s Olly Moss.

The US one dollar bill as canvas. Great images.
Lovely abstract Polaroid photographs by Grant Hamilton.

Sad Guys on Trading Floors: “Turning the economic crisis into one of those clever internet memes.”
My vote for word of the year:
crater intransitive verb
1 : to exhibit or form craters
2 : to fail or fall suddenly and dramatically : collapse , crash <the deal cratered> <cratering stock prices>
A very clever advertisement for laundry detergment:
To demostrate the long-lasting whiteness of the Tide detergent, they created an outdoor poster in a really busy road, with constant heavy traffic. The poster was covered in cotton with self cleaning effect which over the course of a few weeks became more and more polluted, finally revealing a clothes [line] of a brillant white clothes.
What a lousy debate. This t-shirt seems appropriate.

A wonderful animated short: Herr Würfel.
Quite an impressive house. A bit like cubic swiss cheese, no? And a bit out of place in its Japanese neighborhood.

The director of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) testified today before Congress. And on his blog. This by far the most informative, well-written and evenhanded analysis that I’ve read concerning the financial crisis and the Treasury’s response. Highly recommended.

After eight months of service, my AT&T DSL modem (Motorola brand) has already gone belly-up. Eight months of sitting on a shelf and then poof—dead. The best that the technical support staff can offer is, “did you try restarting your computer?” Luckily I found another modem in the closet, connected it, and voila: problem solved.

Great photographs of a striking piece of architecture: Les Bains des Docks.
I love reading the Muni Diaries. Today’s story of two scofflaws receiving a surprising punishment for cheating on their fare was particularly entertaining. Another of my recent favorites: Livin’ the dream, for at least one night.
