This incredibly detailed proposal for an overhaul of BART signage and maps (PDF, 2.6MB) is worth a read. The elegance and consistency are compelling, and the color-coding is inspired. But I have to admit mixed feelings about the map redesign itself; I get a sense of form over function. Finally, there is one glaring omission: unless you can decipher the mumbled operator announcements, there is no way to tell where you are going.
